Subscription states

Last updated: February 8, 2026

Subscriptions in Rebill move through different states depending on payment success, manual actions, or configuration. Each state tells you what's happening with the subscription.

Possible states

Active

The subscription is current. All payments are processing successfully on schedule.

What it means:

  • The customer is being charged on each billing cycle

  • No payment issues

  • The subscription continues automatically

What to do: Nothing. The subscription runs automatically.

Retrying

A recurring payment failed for a recoverable reason and automatic retries are running.

What it means:

  • The scheduled payment was declined

  • The decline reason is recoverable (e.g., insufficient funds, temporary bank rejection)

  • Rebill is automatically retrying the payment 4 times over 8 days

What to do: Wait for the retries to complete. If any retry succeeds, the subscription returns to Active.

Important: Retries only run if the payment failed for a soft decline (recoverable reason). Hard declines (e.g., stolen card, invalid card) do not trigger automatic retries.

Paused

The subscription is paused and no charges are being processed.

What it means:

  • You paused the subscription manually from the dashboard, OR

  • A recurring payment failed and all 4 automatic retries also failed

What to do: To reactivate:

  1. Go to the subscription details

  2. Change the state to Active

  3. Set a next charge date

  4. Save

The subscription resumes on the next charge date.

Cancelled

The subscription was canceled and will not charge the customer again.

What it means:

  • You canceled the subscription from the dashboard

  • The customer cannot cancel subscriptions themselves

What to do: Canceled subscriptions cannot be reactivated. If the customer wants to subscribe again, they need to create a new subscription.

Finished

The subscription had a fixed number of billing cycles, successfully charged all of them, and finished automatically.

What it means:

  • The subscription was configured with a specific number of cycles (e.g., 6 monthly payments)

  • All cycles were charged successfully

  • The subscription ended as planned

What to do: Nothing. The subscription finished its lifecycle. If the customer wants to continue, create a new subscription.

State transitions

Active → Retrying: A recurring payment fails for a recoverable reason (soft decline).

Retrying → Active: One of the 4 automatic retries succeeds.

Retrying → Paused: All 4 automatic retries fail.

Paused → Active: You manually reactivate the subscription and set a new billing date.

Active → Finished: All configured billing cycles are successfully charged.

Any state → Canceled: You cancel the subscription from the dashboard.
